At Arkady Novikov’s new restaurant Indabar, every detail is bewitching. Crossing the threshold of the entrance, you find yourself in an ultra-contemporary Eastern fairy tale. You can enter Indabar only by shaking the hand of Prince Shakyamuni, in whose grasp sits a lotus flower. (The restaurant’s door handle is a sculpture of this shape.) At the entrance guests are also met by an enormous, enigmatic golden Buddha, on whose surface plays the light from the room’s abundant candles. Eastern decorative items, bead curtains, rugs, all manner of vases and statuettes made and painted by hand, leather bean-bag chairs, colorful, comfortable couches with enormous velvet pillows, mirrors in carved golden frames—all these design elements somehow, incredibly, reside harmoniously together within the precise lines of the space’s contemporary design and alongside the professional sound system and plasma screens on the walls. Indabar’s most enchanting detail is the lighting, which directs a delicate play of light and shadow. Even the menu here is presented with special flashlights. The hookah bar and two hookah lounges add to the atmosphere of Eastern enchantment. There are also private areas, as well as karaoke rooms and a dance floor. (The restaurant operates as a club on Fridays and Saturdays.) The menu has all the most popular dishes of various Eastern cuisines—Uzbek plov, Chinese dim sum, Japanese rolls, shish kebab, Indian tandoori chicken, and, of course, everyone’s favorite hand-made savory pastries of Central Asian descent: belyashi, chebureki and samsa.
