Tsar’s Hunt is, it is universally agreed, one of the single greatest restaurants of Russian cuisine. Tsar’s Hunt is a suburban restaurant. Their house-made pirozhki, for which people drive specially to Zhukovka to obtain, are practically legendary, just as are the historical meetings that have taken place here. The most renowned rendezvous was the dinner held by Boris Yeltsin and Jacque Chirac at the Hunt in 1998.
It’s a point of pride for Arkady Novikov to serve guests who wield real power. Head chef Dmitry Kanevsky, in turn, is proud to present a menu that is truly based on traditional Russian gastronomic life.
The restaurant opened in 1996, becoming the first post-Soviet restaurant that finally brought together authentic home-style Russian food with European-style service. It brought Russian cuisine back into a restaurant environment, proving that it was still alive and fully capable of existing within the gastronomic milieu present in Russia at the end of the 20th century.
Tsar’s Hunt is a cozy home with an authentic Russian oven, walls adorned with portraits of Russian royalty, and an interior featuring various utensils, grill forks, pots, rakes, and other miscellanea, all of which together creates the impression of a village dwelling from an old fairy tale.
Another of the restaurant’s singular features is the appetizer bar, which was first introduced in order to cut down on the amount of time guests were forced to wait to receive their food but in fact is a restaurant version of the way Russian appetizers are traditionally served, set out together on a table when guests arrive, and is one of the symbols of Russian hospitality.
